Hot gas test benches for new test center of BorgWarner

Testing technology for the development of more efficient turbochargers

München, July 2013. BorgWarner Turbo Systems, leading supplier of innovative turbocharging systems, equips its new testing facility in Rzeszów / Poland with hot gas test benches from KRATZER AUTOMATION. A number of test benches for the development of turbochargers will be implemented within the next months, another system is already in the planning stage. The hot gas testing technology enables the company to automatically determine the thermodynamic and strength behavior of exhaust gas turbochargers at various operating points.

BorgWarner Turbo Systems has been using testing technology from KRATZER AUTOMATION for several years. In 2000, the first hot gas test benches were brought into service at BorgWarner’s turbocharger development center in Kirchheimbolanden / Germany. With the new testing facility in Poland, BorgWarner Turbo Systems expands its activities in the Eastern European market. The test center is part of the turbocharger plant in Rzeszów that BorgWarner opened in 2009.

In order to further advance the development of innovative turbocharging solutions in Rzeszów, BorgWarner Turbo Systems commissioned KRATZER AUTOMATION to deliver three turbocharger test benches. The test benches are based on a natural gas burner technology that makes it possible to set up exactly reproducible conditions of mass flow, temperature and pressure on the turbocharger and simulate each required operating point. This is particularly important for recording maps and analysing the efficiency of prototypes. The reliable and accurate measurement of the thermodynamic behaviour is a requirement for increasing the power of turbo charged combustion engines and improving the durability of turbochargers.

KRATZER AUTOMATION’s turbocharger test benches are used today by numerous automobile manufacturers and suppliers in Europe and Asia. The company is the leading provider worldwide in the area of hot gas technology. Customers using this technology include CRITT M2A, Honeywell Turbo Technology, IHI Charging Systems International, Shouguang Kangyue Turbocharger and Turbo Energy Limited.

The first three test benches for BorgWarner’s new testing facility in Rzeszów are already built by KRATZER AUTOMATION in Germany, the assembly is proceeding at the moment.

About KRATZER AUTOMATION

KRATZER AUTOMATION was founded in 1980 by Gerhard Kratzer and Paul Balz as Gerhard Kratzer GmbH Automatisierungstechnik München. From the outset, the company focused on creating industrial, process-related software. Projects in the company’s early years addressed a wide range of industries: in addition to developing the software for Ruhrgas’ operations control centre in Essen, the company was also commissioned to automate engine test benches for SHELL and BMW Motorsport and supported the ADAC in controlling its breakdown service fleet through the use of mobile data communications.

Since the mid-1980s, the company began developing software tools for various applications, for example for capturing and storing measurements and displaying them in diagrams. Early in the 1990s, KRATZER AUTOMATION was transformed from a pure software company to a general contractor offering an end-to-end service. In 1999, the company was converted into a stock corporation.

For more than 30 years, KRATZER AUTOMATION has been a successful software company for process-oriented solutions in the automotive, electronic manufacturing and the transport industries. In all three sectors, we strive for optimal solutions and efficient processes along the customer value chain.

KRATZER AUTOMATION proposes cadis, an operational Transport Management System (TMS) to optimise the planning, the execution and the analysis of all operational work processes for the distribution of goods for freight forwarders. Shipment tracking and optimization of working processes are two central components.

The workforce increased continuously to its current level of more than 250 employees who work at eight locations worldwide both in Europe and Asia. In addition to its headquarters in Munich, KRATZER AUTOMATION has branch offices in Stuttgart, Kassel and Wolfsburg, as well as subsidiaries in France, Great Britain, Czech Republic and China.

In its Test Systems division, KRATZER AUTOMATION plans and implements test systems for the automotive industry, for example for engines, turbochargers and gear chains. In particular, the company focuses on developing test benches for energy-saving and environmentally-friendly drive concepts.
